One of the greatest benefits of taking Spanish courses in Granada is that it offers the opportunity to get acquainted with one of the most magical cities of Spain. There is more than a grain of truth in the popular saying (among Granadians!) "Quien no ha visto a Granada, no ha visto nada" (He who has not seen Granada has seen nothing). The beauty of Granada, its architecture, its gardens and that of the surrounding countryside will capture the heart of the visitor. It is an historical city, home to artists and immortalised by its poets - chief among them being Federico García Lorca, tragically murdered near Granada at the start of the civil war in 1936. Its music forms a rich store of melody drawing many musicians to the city. It has been a university city from the time of the Moors, and was the last stronghold of the Moorish dynasties in Spain. Granada was also the capital of the Empire established by the "Catholic Monarchy" of Ferdinand and Isabel following the defeat of the Moors in 1492. Granada offers a varied cultural landscape, a university town with a strong student ambience, endless possibilities for recreation and sport. Granada, with a population of 270,000 is the cultural capital of Andalucia. More than 50,000 students attend its University, and contribute to the lively atmosphere of the city. Every year, the city plays host to several prestigious festivals - Music, Dance, Theatre, Flamenco, Tango and Jazz. Small shops, bars, markets and little squares shaded by leafy trees form the backdrop to daily life. Lorca described Granada as a place for relaxation and enjoyment, whose people were "honourable, sensitive and passionate". "Granada is a city of artists"
The Albayzin is a medieval Arab quarter, with narrow cobbled streets, traditional white painted houses of Arab design, with gardens and terraces, and everywhere, the pervading scent of jasmine. It has been declared a World Heritage Centre by UNESCO. The Alhambra dominates the eastern skyline, while in the distance the perpetual snows of the Sierra Nevada provide a backdrop to this magnificent sight.
Also close by is the barrio of Sacromonte, famous for its gypsy caves - where you can hear Flamenco music - and get fleeced if you are not careful! One essential place to visit is the Mirador San Nicolás, from which there is a magnificent view of the Alhambra. Other places of interest are the Plaza Larga and the Plaza de Aliatar. Granada has some of the best tapas bars in Spain - try El Torquato to begin with. The Albayzin is a barrio of artists, painters and craftsmen. It is a place of cobbled streets, bars in lively squares, jasmine, poplars and bourgainvillea.
Apart from various organised activities, co-ordinated or suggested by the college, the cultural, recreational and leisure opportunities in Granada are endless. Here are some possibilities:
Students may gain access to this wide range of sporting and recreational facilities during leisure time simply by presenting their college student card.
